It was a cracking day for the start of the RSHYR 2022 race, with early mist lifting to a bright sunny afternoon and a building nor'easter, which had the fleet heading upwind from the start at 1pm. Outside, the colour of the ocean was incredible.

There was all sorts of mayhem for the front of the fleet heading down Sydney Harbour with numerous port and starboard clashes, as the 100-footers kept getting locked in on the western side of the course, up against the spectator fleet.

It was hard to know exactly who had infringed where when the fleet rounded the harbour mark! But it appears that Comanche is lodging a protest for an incident there.

Meanwhile, Hamilton Island Wild Oats sent the accompanying flotilla scattering when she suddenly carried out a 720 degree exoneration shortly after turning south at the seaward mark.

All will doubtless be revealed after the the 100 footers reach Hobart. Sadly, once again, we may have to wait to find out who will definitively be declared the Line Honours winner.

Crosbie and Dale Lorimer were up in a chopper shooting the start action; here's a selection of their images as the fleet set off down the NSW coast.
